Walking Trails for Active Minds

Refernal Ltd creates thoughtfully guided hiking experiences through Killarney's most beautiful natural landscapes, specifically designed for pensioners who love the outdoors.

How This Started

We're refernal Ltd, and honestly, we started because we noticed something missing. There were hiking guides everywhere, but most weren't thinking about what actually works for people in their 60s, 70s, and beyond. They'd advertise "challenging trails" and "advanced trekking" — but that's not what our community wanted.

In 2019, we began leading small groups through Killarney's most stunning areas. Torc Waterfall, Muckross Friars Glen, the hidden forest loops — places that don't require scrambling over rocks or pushing yourself to exhaustion. What we've learned over these years is that the best hike isn't the hardest one. It's the one where you can actually talk with friends, notice the wildlife, and feel genuinely accomplished at the end.

We've walked these trails with hundreds of people now. Some were coming back after years away from hiking. Others had never done it seriously before. And it's been remarkable watching how differently people experience these forests when the pace is right and the route respects your abilities. That's become our whole approach.

Our Track Record

Numbers tell part of the story. But what really matters is that we've built something sustainable — hiking experiences that people genuinely enjoy, come back to, and tell their friends about.

What We Actually Do

Our approach isn't complicated, but it's deliberate. We've thought through every detail that matters for a great experience.

Thoughtful Route Planning

We've hiked every section ourselves dozens of times. Torc Waterfall's 4km loop, Muckross Friars Glen's gentle forest circuit — each route balances distance, terrain difficulty, and natural beauty. No surprises, no shortcuts that don't exist.

Small Group Sizes

We keep groups to 12-15 people maximum. That's the number where everyone can walk comfortably, conversation flows naturally, and our guides can actually notice if someone's struggling.

Realistic Pacing

Three kilometres per hour isn't some arbitrary number — it's based on what works for active people over 60. We build in regular rest stops. No one's rushing. The waterfall or the glen isn't going anywhere.

Real Knowledge

Our guides aren't just hiking enthusiasts — they know Killarney's geology, history, and ecology. Why the waterfall exists, what the friars were actually doing here, which plants you're walking past.

Safety First

Every guide carries first aid certification. We check weather forecasts seriously. Walking conditions change, and we adapt routes if needed. Your safety isn't negotiable.

Genuine Community

People come back because they've made friends. refernal Ltd hikes aren't just about ticking off trails — they're about connection and shared experience.

Our Direction

Building Something Lasting

Refernal Ltd isn't trying to become huge. We're deliberately staying small enough to maintain quality. We're expanding our guided experiences — new seasonal routes, special theme walks exploring Killarney's natural history, partnerships with local conservation efforts. But the core stays the same: thoughtful hiking for people who love being outdoors and want to do it properly.
